Manchester City have looked unstoppable so far this season, with their Champions League qualifiers guaranteed and 36 goals scored in just 11 Premier League games.
But a familiar problem still remains alongside Pep Guardiola, and this was also evident in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
Riyad Mahrez got a penalty for City in the 58th minute and the Algerian took the lead, but Gregor Kobel saved the point kick.
Mahrez missed two penalties in a row after failing to win their previous 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. He has scored 10 overall out of 14 penalties he has taken since moving to Etihad in 2018.

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a good save and gave City more trouble.
City have missed 25 of Guardiola’s 80 penalties – the worst record for any Premier League club at the time.
While the Spaniard tried to explain the reason for their poor 12-yard record after the game, he admitted it was a problem on his side.
‘Of course it’s a problem, we’ve missed 24 or 25 penalties in most Champions Leagues since I’ve been here. Too much,” he told BT Sport.
“I always admire the courage to take them but of course we miss a lot of penalties.
Mahrez also missed a penalty in City’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen earlier this month.
City missed 25 out of 80 penalties from Guardiola.
‘We missed it in Copenhagen and here too. There are good margins in this competition.
In this case, I admire Mahrez’s courage. Next time he feels it, I admire his courage (and) he will take it.’
Former City defender Joleon Lescott claimed that the diversity of penalty players the club used could be a potential reason for their poor record from that point forward.
He told BT Sport: ‘I never had the courage to take that penalty, so I don’t know what it’s like to take it even if you missed.
‘I don’t think the lack of that consistency helps. I think this buyer was Riyadh, De Bruyne bought them, Gundogan, now Haaland.
‘I think he’s always been a consistent penalty player in all the teams we’ve played on.’
Joleon Lescott and Rio Ferdinand highlight the problematic nature of pointers for City
Rio Ferdinand reiterated the troubled nature of their poor record and believes there is more pressure on City the next time they take a penalty.
“There’s going to be tension around them now that they’ve missed so many things and it’s getting a little talked about,” he said.
The fact that the manager emphasized there – and he could talk to them in the locker room.
‘Next player, yes there is pressure but that pressure has increased because they missed so much.’
