Who was playing who for the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. With a 27-22 win at Tampa Bay, the Ravens moved to 5-3 while very much like AFC North’s top team. Conversely, the Buccaneers, now 3-5 after a third consecutive loss, looked like a team that didn’t have a legitimate chance to play deep into January.
Tampa Bay started hot before fading in the final three quarters of the game. Baltimore’s rush to pass made life miserable for Tom Brady, who beat Ben Roethlisberger in the first half as the most fired quarterback in NFL history. It was a much better night for the visiting quarterback as Lamar Jackson scored twice on 27 of 38 passes. Jackson was also part of a running game that rolled 233 yards and helped break the 38-minute game clock.
Closing the first half, the Ravens took the lead on third-quarter touchdown passes from Jackson to Kenyan Drake and Isaiah Probably. Baltimore took a double-digit lead on Devin Duvernay’s 15-yard touchdown streak with 6:35 remaining as the Buccaneers scored their first-of-the-half field goal from Ryan Succop.
Brady briefly kept hope alive with a late goal pass to Julio Jones. The Ravens, however, caught Brady’s 302-game winning streak without three consecutive losses as they took the ensuing offensive hit and sealed the win.
The Buccaneers were leading 10-3 at halftime after making two red zone errors in the first 30 minutes of the game. Tampa Bay also got a good first half from Brady, and Chris Godwin’s 44-yard finish allowed Leonard Fournette to score in the middle of the first quarter.
On Thursday evening, both teams suffered serious injuries. The Ravens lost to receiver Rashod Bateman (foot) and Mark Andrews (shoulder) in the first three quarters of the game, then lost to Gus Edwards (hamstring) in the fourth quarter. Why did the ravens win?
Baltimore dominated the floor while controlling the ball for more than two-thirds of the game. Led by Edwards and Drake, Baltimore dominated the field as they beat their halftime mistakes in the red zone. The Ravens also had great contributions from Likely and Demarcus Robinson, who teamed up to hit 12 of the 15 targets at 141 yards.
Defensively, the Ravens closed Brady and the Buccaneers offense for most of the last three quarters of the game. Justin Houston took a sip from the Fountain of Youth, recording two sacks and two teams for losses. Houston and the rest of his teammates closed Tampa Bay’s running game while holding Brady to only 26 of 44 passes.
Why did the pirates lose
Tampa Bay’s offense completely dried up after the first quarter. The unit gambled five times in a row while leaving their defense with little or no rest. While his running game didn’t do him any favors, Brady also failed to make a few third-down passes to move the chains. Penalties also disturbed the Buccaneers offense, including Fournette’s faulty start with the Buccaneers 11 behind and a fourth and goal from the 3-yard line with 4:57 remaining.
Although their offense didn’t help them, the Pirate defense failed to play a momentum-shifting game in the second half. The unit was also unable to keep Baltimore out as the Ravens ran around and through the defenses of Tampa Bay.
A bright spot for the pirates was the connection between Brady and Mike Evans. Evans hit 6 of 11 goals for 123 yards, including the 51-yard catch, which made up the Buccaneers’ first score in the second half.
Turning point
Baltimore dominated the third quarter, dominating Tampa Bay 14-0 and controlling the ball for nearly 13 minutes. The Ravens offense started the half with a 9-game, 77-yard drive and ended with Jackson’s goal-scoring pass to Drake.
The Ravens defense then forced a quick Tampa Bay punt before Baltimore’s offense kicked off an 11-game, 80-yard drive, punctuated by Jackson’s stylish touchdown pass to Possibility, with five seconds into the third quarter.

With Andrews and Bateman out, Likely stepped up and landed a critical touchdown that gave the Ravens the lead forever. The rookie tight end caught six passes for 77 yards on Thursday night after making just 10 catches in the first seven games of the season.

Jackson let some of his fans speak for him after the win. The former league MVP enjoyed a sign that hinted at his current contract status as he played under the fifth-year rookie option after Jackson and the Ravens failed to agree on a long-term deal last season.

The Pirates will host the Rams in the rematch of the exciting divisional round in January. Like the Buccaneers, the Rams are starting this season slow. The defending champions said goodbye with a 3-3 record.
Baltimore will head to Baton Rouge on November 7 to face the Saints in “Monday Night Football.” Offensive injuries have plagued the Saints so far as New Orleans are only 2-5.
